The Fall Guy—starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt—is currently playing in theatres around the world. But if you don’t feel like going to the cinemas because it’s too expensive, inconvenient, you’re agoraphobic, or you can’t find a sitter, you’re likely wondering when it might be available to watch at home. (Okay, scratch that “likely”. After all, you’re reading this.) While an exact digital or streaming date for The Fall Guy is not available, we can make educated guesses about when it might arrive.
Let’s start with what we know. The Fall Guy will stream on Peacock in the US, Sky Cinema in the UK and Ireland, Netflix in Australia and New Zealand, Amazon Prime Video in Canada, and JioCinema in India. That’s because it’s the case for all movies made by Universal Pictures, the studio that bankrolled The Fall Guy. (Well, in most cases anyway, as you will soon find out.) Prior to its streaming release, The Fall Guy will be made available on video-on-demand platforms to rent or buy.
But the answer to “when” is a lot more challenging. It’s time to look at Universal’s past practices. Naturally, everything below is speculation on my part.
The Fall Guy review: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are dreamy
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s chemistry takes the roof off director David Leitch’s new film—his best so far.
Universal’s cinema-to-home movie strategy
Of every major Hollywood studio, Universal Pictures is the most aggressive player when it comes to the window between its films opening in theatres and arriving on digital. In some cases, it can be as small as three weekends. Universal operates with a premium video-on-demand model—it costs between $20 and $30 to rent or buy a film during this period. Prices then drop to between $5 and $20 after the PVOD window.
The most recent Universal movie to follow this pattern was Dev Patel’s action thriller, Monkey Man. It debuted on April 5 in US cinemas and arrived on April 23 on home digital platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Video, Vudu, and YouTube Movies. That’s just 18 days!
But it varies. Before that, Universal had Kung Fu Panda 4—the animated film released on March 8 in US cinemas and punched into video-on-demand on April 9. That’s 32 days.
As for Peacock, Universal movies first hit streaming in the US between one to four months after release. After four months on Peacock, they move to Amazon Prime Video for 10 months (Netflix, in the case of animated films) before returning to Peacock.
Night Swim is the most recent Universal theatrical release that has arrived on Peacock. The supernatural horror film opened on January 5 in US theatres and arrived on PVOD after 18 days on January 23. Just as with Monkey Man. It hit Peacock on April 5, three months—91 days, to be specific—from its theatrical debut.
How to stream The Fall Guy (2024) in the US
Of course, none of these films are an apples-to-apples comparison to The Fall Guy—a film with bigger stars and a bigger budget ($125 million). For that, we have to go back to last year’s Fast X, the tenth entry in the gonzo Fast & Furious franchise.
Fast X moved from theatres to video-on-demand after three weeks in the US and a month in the UK. It was made available to Peacock subscribers on September 15. That’s 119 days after opening in cinemas.
The case was similar to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released last April in cinemas. It struck video-on-demand platforms on May 16 in the US, 41 days after the first showing in theatres. It began streaming August 3 on Peacock, 120 days from its April 5 premiere.
Going by these numbers, The Fall Guy is expected to hit PVOD no later than June 13, assuming Universal waits 41 days. The Gosling movie should begin streaming on Peacock around August 31, if it’s in line with the 120-day policy.
How to stream The Fall Guy in the UK and Ireland
As you already know, the answer to that is Sky Cinema. For on-demand viewing, Sky Cinema is available via the Sky and Virgin Media platforms as well as NOW, EE TV, and TalkTalk TV. So, when can audiences in the UK and Ireland expect to stream The Fall Guy?
With Fast X, it took 231 days for the film to show up on Sky Cinema, landing on January 5. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it was a slightly longer wait—the film hit Sky Cinema on Christmas Day, 264 days after its theatrical debut.
Assuming a midway point of 248 days, I expect The Fall Guy to begin streaming on January 5, 2025, on Sky Cinema in the UK and Ireland.
Who is streaming The Fall Guy in Australia and New Zealand?
If you’ve been reading since the beginning, you already know the answer to that: Netflix. But when can you expect to see The Fall Guy on Netflix?
Let’s go back to Fast X. While it arrived on August 3 on Peacock in the US, it took a few more months to land in Australia and New Zealand—December 23, to be precise. That’s 219 days after its theatrical debut. Meanwhile, The Super Mario Bros. Movie took 214 days before it hit Netflix on November 5 in Australia and New Zealand.
Assuming an average of 216 days (and given that The Fall Guy released on April 24 in ANZ), I reckon the Gosling movie should arrive on November 26 on Netflix in Australia and New Zealand.
How to stream The Fall Guy (2024) in Canada
As is the case for all Universal movies, The Fall Guy will be available on Prime Video in Canada. And thankfully, you won’t have to wait as long as audiences in the UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
We know that thanks to what happened in the past. Fast X drifted in on October 6 on Prime Video in Canada, which puts the cinema-to-streaming window at 140 days. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, on the other hand, jumped in even faster after just 128 days. It was available on August 11 on Prime Video in Canada.
If Universal sticks to those timelines, I expect The Fall Guy to release around September 14 on Prime Video in Canada (given an average of 134 days between cinemas and streaming).
The Fall Guy OTT release date in India
Thanks to the Peacock hub on JioCinema, India is usually second in line—after the US—when it comes to new Universal movies arriving on streaming. We saw that with both Fast X and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which were released on JioCinema three and four days after their Peacock debut, respectively.
Fast X was dropped on September 18 on JioCinema in India, 122 days after its theatrical release. The Mario movie made its way to JioCinema on August 7, which was 124 days from its debut in Indian cinemas.
With The Fall Guy expected on August 31 on Peacock (by my calculations), the new Gosling movie should begin streaming around September 3 on JioCinema in India.
