Spoilers ahead for episode 5 of House of the Dragon season 2.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or your actions come back to bite you. That’s what happened to both Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower and “King Consort” Daemon Targaryen in the fifth episode of the second season of House of the Dragon last week. With King Aegon II close to death, Alicent put herself forth as the reliable regent. After all, she had served in that very capacity when her late husband, King Viserys, was ill. But she was rejected. Instead, the council preferred her teenage son and dragonrider, Aemond One-Eye, over her. Ouch. I suppose that’s what you deserve for pushing the rights of men over women in Westeros.

As for Daemon, his lack of care for how the rivermen are treated as long as he gets his army stupendously backfires. After the Brackens turned down his deal, Daemon gave the Blackwoods a free hand in dealing with their long-term rivals. The atrocities they commit are too much for the other riverlords. They show up at Harrenhal and tell Daemon, in no uncertain terms, that they will not be raising any banners in his name. That feels like the end of his desire to convert himself from a fake consort to a real king.

The episode ended in Dragonstone with the promise of more mayhem. How should the Queen respond to the Battle of Rook’s Rest and the loss of Rhaenys and her famed dragon? Rhaenyra lamented the lack of choices, the kind that can go up against Aemond’s Vhagar and survive. But they aren’t lacking in dragons—rather dragonriders. Her heir Jace asks his mother to expand her search. After all, the Targaryens have blood relatives in other Westerosi families. Who will take the reins of Vermithor and Silverwing?
