Spoilers ahead for episode 7 of House of the Dragon season 2.

The start of episode 7 caused a seismic shift in Rhaenyra’s approach to her conundrum, “What good are dragons without dragonriders?” After discovering that Seasmoke—the dragon who had burnt her Lord Commander of the Queensguard to a crisp—had picked a lowly-born shipwright as its new rider, the Targaryen Queen wondered how she could replicate it. Mysaria correctly advised her to look beyond the thin bloodlines of the elite and search among the dragonseeds, bastards with Valyrian blood in them. With King’s Landing holding no future for them, many made the trip to Dragonstone. And though most predictably lost their lives, Rhaenyra had three new dragonriders amongst her force by the end of the episode.

What might she do with this new arsenal? All season, Rhaenyra has practised a cautionary approach, not wanting to unleash any dragons for the untold damage they can cause. House of the Dragon gave us a glimpse of it in episode 4. But the war hasn’t exactly been progressing as she might have hoped. She has no land army she can speak of—Daemon is practically useless in Harrenhal and it’s not like he’s interested in helping Rhaenyra—and Criston Cole is likely out there sweeping the Crownlands. Though she may not like it, her new dragonriders might be the only offensive option available to her. (Rhaena might soon bolster that number, given what episode 7 hinted at in the Vale scene.)
