Spoilers ahead for episode 7 of The Rings of Power season 2.
This is what the entire season had been building up to. After six episodes of teasing and table-setting, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series delivered the sophomore run’s crowning achievement: the Siege of Eregion. The war-heavy episode gave us mighty action, from Adar damming the rivers that kept Eregion safe by taking chunks out of the nearby mountain to an all-out melee fest as Elrond’s army attempted to stop the orcs from breaching the walls. Ultimately, the elves lost. Adar seemingly killed Arondir and defeated Elrond—who failed to deliver on the threat he issued in the tent—ending up with Galadriel’s ring in his possession.
That was partly down to a lack of support Elrond was hinging on. He had gone to Khazad-dûm to ask Durin IV for help but the dwarf, having problems of his own in trying to stop his father from digging more into the mountain, was unable to come to the elves’ aid. Elrond’s strategic kiss—or was there more to it?—did help Galadriel free herself. That was crucial. Celebrimbor, struggling to finish the nine rings for men, discovered the truth about Eregion and confronted Sauron/Annatar but the master manipulator found a way to turn it on him. The elven smith managed to escape his clutches briefly and ran into Galadriel, offloading the rings and momentarily delaying Sauron’s inevitable rise to power.
The Rings of Power season 2 review: from pure torture to wild ambition
