This week, men’s tennis action takes us to Halle, Germany and London, England with two simultaneous ATP 500 grass court events.
Akhil Arora, an amateur tennis player and avid ATP 500 viewer who has been writing about sport since 2010. He has reported live from Wembley and Wimbledon.
Following wins for Alex de Minaur and Jack Draper in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Stuttgart, respectively, at the year’s first grass court events, the ATP Tour heads to London for Queen’s Club tennis and Halle for the 2024 Halle Open. (Officially, for sponsorship reasons, the two tournaments are known as the Cinch Championships and the Terra Wortmann Open.) With Halle, men’s tennis is in fact staying in Germany—we’re simply moving from Stuttgart in the southwest to Halle near Leipzig in the east. Unlike last week’s ATP 250 Libema and Boss Open, both Queen’s Club and Halle Open are ATP 500 events.
The higher profile of the events—as well as the increased ranking points available—is drawing the most of the world’s top 10 players. Jannik Sinner, the new world number one, is in action at the 2024 Halle Open. Roland Garros finalist Alexander Zverev is the second seed at what is a home grass court event. Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev—the latter was a finalist in 2023—are the next two seeds at Halle, with Hubert Hurkacz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Halle defending champion Alexander Bublik, and Felix Auger-Aliassime rounding out the top eight in Germany.
Meanwhile, world number two Carlos Alcaraz is the first seed and defending champion at Queen’s Club Championships. The 2024 Libema Open winner and 2023 Queen’s finalist de Minaur—now ranked #7 in the world—is the second seed. Grigor Dimitrov, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, Holger Rune, and Ugo Humbert make up the other top competitors at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships. Home favourite Andy Murray is also in the draw alongside fellow Brits Dan Evans, Cameron Norrie, and Stuttgart winner Draper.
