Twenty teams are participating in the 2024 edition—hosted by the West Indies and the United States—which began on June 1 and will conclude with the final on June 29.
For the first time in the history of cricket, the United States is hosting a major ICC event in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. The tournament—usually held every two years—is being co-hosted by the US and West Indies. This is the second time the T20 World Cup has had two hosts. (The COVID-19 delayed 2021 edition took place in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.) It’s also the biggest ever—with a total of 20 teams, four more than we had two years ago when England lifted the trophy for the second time. Canada, Uganda, and the American co-hosts are first-time participants.
The 55 matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup will be held in nine venues across the United States and West Indies. In the US, that includes Texas, Florida, and New York, with a 34,000-seater temporary stadium erected in Nassau County, New York just for this tournament. (That’s also the largest stadium for the 2024 T20 World Cup.) The remaining six venues are scattered across Guyana (on the northern coast of South America) and five islands in the Caribbean: Barbados, Saint Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda, Trinidad & Tobago, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
What is the full team list for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup? What’s the format and schedule like? And most importantly, where can you catch the action around the world? It’s time to answer all of that.
2024 T20 World Cup teams
The twenty teams competing in the 2024 edition have been split into four groups.
Group A: Canada, India, Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States
Group B: Australia, England, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland
Group C: Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and West Indies
Group D: Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, South Africa, and Sri Lanka
The schedule
There are two group stages in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In the initial round, there will be 10 matches within every group as teams play one match against each other. A win is worth two points and a loss is worth nothing.
This group stage runs from Saturday, June 1 to Monday, June 17. Canada played the United States in the opening match in Dallas, Texas. The final group stage match is West Indies vs. Afghanistan in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.
The top two teams in each group will qualify for the Super 8 round. Don’t be fooled by its fancy name—it’s just another group stage. The eight teams will be divided into two groups as follows:
Super 8 Group 1: Winners of Group A and Group C, Runners-up of Group B and Group D
Super 8 Group 2: Winners of Group B and Group D, Runners-up of Group A and Group C
There will be six matches in each Super 8 group, with each team playing the other three teams once. Super 8 runs from Thursday, June 20 to Monday, June 24. Starting with the Super 8, all matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup will take place in the West Indies.
The top two teams from each Super 8 group will move on to the knockouts. The winner of Super 8 Group 1 will play the runner-up of Group 2, while the winner of Group 2 will play the runner-up of Group 1. The semi-finals take place on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27.
That leaves the final which is set for Saturday, June 29 in Barbados.
