Spoilers ahead for episode 6 of The Rings of Power season 2.
There were two trials on The Rings of Power last week. In Rhûn, Tom Bombadil took the Stranger to a place with lots of dead trees and left him there to find his staff with an ultimatum. If he doesn’t figure it out, he’s going to doom Nori and the others. No pressure, huh? Over in Númenor, Pharazôn punished Elendil for inciting violence even though it was his own son Kemen who was responsible for more of it. Elendil was imprisoned and about to be cast to the sea-worm but at the last minute, Míriel stepped up. Since he was doing her bidding, she said she should be tested not Elendil. Míriel passed the trial and was hailed by the assembled crowd. Pharazôn did not look pleased.
Elsewhere, Sauron/Annatar tried to balance his agendas. In Khazad-dûm, he asked King Durin III for more mithril but was turned down. His son, Durin IV, was momentarily pleased only to learn his father was driving a hard bargain. Seeing that the ring had a hold on him, he asked him to take it off. But the King refused and used the ring’s power on his son when he forcibly tried to get it off him. Disa then convinced her husband that they needed to put an end to the King’s designs and usurp the throne for he is not who he used to be.
The Rings of Power season 2 review: from pure torture to wild ambition
The Lord of the Rings series delivers bigger action and a less puzzle-oriented plot but also makes a few calamitous filmmaking errors.
Over in Eregion, Sauron had to deal with a jittery Celebrimbor who’s being crushed under pressure to make rings for men. He’s unable to figure it out and snapping at his fellow elven smiths. Sauron used the opportunity to further isolate him from the rest of Eregion, going so far as to warp reality itself. With Adar convincing Galadriel their goals are aligned and confirming what he suspected of Halbrand, he unleashed his legions of orcs to assault Eregion in an attempt to kill Sauron (again). Galadriel felt Adar was handing Sauron an army—the one thing he lacks—but he wasn’t interested in listening to her. After Adar began his attack, a concerned Celebrimbor stepped out, forcing Sauron to use his considerable powers to fool him, making it look like Eregion was fine even though everyone was panicking.
The episode’s final moments signalled what’s to come—the much talked about Siege of Eregion episode, which the creators have described as the “most ambitious undertaking” they have attempted. It involved weeks of night shoots. With that, here are the release times for The Rings of Power season 2 episode 7.
