It lives! The Mumbai Film Festival, better known as MAMI—named after its organising body, Mumbai Academy of Moving Image—is back in physical form after a gap of four years. (There were a couple of years when it went online only in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.) And thanks to the riches of its primary sponsor Jio—owned by one of Asia’s richest men, Mukesh Ambani—MAMI 2023 promises to be bigger than ever. For one, it will run for a full 10 days: October 27 to November 5. Across the opening weekend, films will be screened at the glitzy 2,000-plus-seater Grand Theatre at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.

In total, over 250 movies will be shown, with more than 40 world premieres and 45 Asia premieres. So, how do you select to watch? Well, here’s a guide to just that. Let’s get the big caveat out of the way: I’ve only picked—going by reviews and film festival awards—new feature-length movies and documentaries, ones that made their bow this year. MAMI 2023 has a lot more on offer, including a bunch of shorts, retrospectives, tributes, and even recaps of past years when the festival went online. My selection spans five continents and 15 countries, with titles coming in from Chile to Japan, and from Finland to Vietnam.

It’s much tougher to pick Indian films at MAMI 2023, though, given the paucity of reviews. But a few promising ones include Kanu Behl’s second feature after a nine-year gap Agra, Karan Tejpal’s Stolen about two brothers looking for a kidnapped baby, and Varun Grover’s semi-autobiographical debut feature All India Rank. And don’t forget the documentaries Against the Tide about two fishermen from Mumbai’s Koli community, and While We Watched which finds Ravish Kumar tackling threats and misinformation as press freedom disintegrates around him. Okay, it’s time to look at everything else, starting with movies before jumping into docus.
